MarketplaceGondry Jack Black Would actions of Jack Black and Mos Def in "Be Kind Rewind" really violent violation of copyright? I am a little confused, because in the film, some lawyers come to a club video of Mr. Fletcher and confiscate and destroy all the "Sweded" Films Jack Black and Mos Deb is (parody based on famous films, but actually use the talents and ideas quite original production).
If this had happened in real life, lawyers would have really been able to do so?
I guess what confuses me is that the film "Be Kind Rewind" itself seems to be in breach of copyright of all those dozens of films if the answer is yes. So how Michel Gondry around this? (Or the studio that produced Be Kind Rewind permission for all these films to be shown?) Technically, this is a parody and protected under freedom of expression, but in this case they were making money off of using the ideas of others, and the lawyers knew they did not have much money to fight them or take them to court, so they tried to stop them.
